The IFoA is seeking to appoint appropriately qualified individuals to undertake exam counselling for members who apply for this service after failing an examination.
Counselling is undertaken by a qualified Fellow and is only available to those attempting their final exam subject prior to qualifying as either an Associate or a Fellow.
The service allows members to request a written report, or a report and a telephone call with their assigned counsellor.
At the IFoA we aim to reflect the experience and views of the full diversity of actuaries within our profession. We encourage interest from a diverse range of potential applicants, in terms of, but not exclusively gender, age, disability, ethnicity, geographical location and practice areas.

Following each biannual exam session’s results release, we will receive a number of counselling requests. Exam counselling booking is open to candidates for 1 month in July and for 6 weeks in December/January.
Exam Counsellor responsibilities include:
- Reviewing the candidate’s exam script submission.
- Completing a written templated report (usually within a 3-week deadline).
- Offering constructive feedback to the candidate in their written report, with guidance on examination techniques and where improvements could be made in future examination attempts.
- Being available (if required) for a follow-up call with the candidate to discuss the report in detail.
Timelines
Exam counselling takes place after exam results are released, from July to September (April exam sessions) and December to February (September exam sessions).
